RFID technology has been endlessly debated for quite some time now within industry and retail. Certainly, it has evolved rapidly in recent years and is becoming more and more important. RFID technology makes it possible to broadly identify objects in large quantities. German companies employ the term “Industry 4.0” widely and are working hard to figure out new ways in which the technology can improve business. RFID and Industry 4.0 are directly linked to each other. The company Winckel has demonstrated this clearly with its latest technology developments.

Written by Jörg Bald, Managing Director, Winckel

Waldemar Winckel is a leading full service provider of RFID-based process management systems. For many years now, they have been determined to calculate how to use the new RFID technology options efficiently for object identification in order to tap its full potential within industry and logistics. The CEO Jörg Bald specifies the results as “event-based process management”. Our new system platform “AMIA” enables you to benefit from the extensive opportunities.

Real-time data creates “Event-based process management”

Intelligent logics can analyse large volumes of data from identification processes in real time and are independently managing complex process chains. The “logics” trigger automated, appropriate actions, and these are designed to manage, inform or control. In addition, the logics provide important information about possible problems and their causes, as well as actionable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

The AMIA information level monitors and visualises relevant figures (KPIs) in real time for the user, AMIA clearly shows alerts or malfunctions and quota deviations via SMS or e-mail. The information level also processes collected data and shows these within statistics and reports. On another level, processes are targeted. In this case, the platform provides tools and applications for intelligent, reliable real-time process control such as Kanban, loading control or picking monitoring.

A modular platform, that grows with its tasks

AMIA is divided into several modules. A comprehensive device management supports the control of the hardware components in use. “On-board” applications such as real time locating (RTLS) and tracking & tracing (T&T) are already available in an application module. Other modules are used for intelligent process control, information retrieval and visualisation (dashboards). A variety of standard interfaces also ensures smooth import as well as data and information tranfer to higher-level systems such as ERP or MES. NoSQL databases, cluster capability, complex event processing, scalability and other features provide the required technological performance and security. AMIA has a dynamic data model (schema-less data) and adapts to the customers’ specific requirements. The application level of the software is browser-based (HTML 5) and does not require any complex installation.

More transparency, efficiency and f lexibility within processes

“AMIA” allows companies to increase their transparency, efficiency and flexibility considerably. As the platform grows so does its ability – this makes the set-up costs and the potential benefits fascinating to analyse. The application of these new options, however, usually requires a process reanalysis and an expert analysis of the initial and the optimum situation from both a technical and an economic point of view. For more than 15 years, Winckel has been developing a specially tailored portfolio of consulting services, which are designed to locate existing potentials in close cooperation with the customer, to define action fields and to implement them in order of priority. Our aim is always to start with “neuralgic” points of the company – when these are tackled, we achieve the quickest ROI, says Jörg Bald. Often this takes less than a year.
