HID Global and AMCS increase waste management efficiency by using RFID

Information on weight, time and location is crucial for high volume containers especially if 140 containers need to be picked up per day. Information on weight, time and location is crucial for high volume containers especially if 140 containers need to be picked up per day.

Recycling and waste logistics

Waste on the right track

A short example suffices to illustrate that the waste management sector offers high optimization potentials: The volume of waste varies from one householf to the next between 500 and 2 000 kilograms per year. However private end users mostly pay a flat-rate fee. Individual billing could offer incentives for recycling and sustainability. HID Global and AMCS took a technically innovative approach and developed waste logistics in significant respects during a five year cooperation. The experiences prove that a technical reform is possible and necessary.

The Challenges

Avoiding empty runs

AMCS committed itself to always providing its thousands of customers in waste management technically progressive integrated solutions. This concept can only be realized by means of innovative product development, qualified project management and extensive customer service. AMCS' local customers are confronted with the task of reducing the number of empty runs in order to increase the efficiency of routes and vehicle fleets. Underutilized vehicles might for instance be sent on different routes with higher waste production. Furthermore municipal disposal companies need a way to exactly charge the services they provide and to find a fast solution for missing or damaged garbage cans.

Efficient asset management

In the fields of business and industry the management of high-value assets is of major importance. The management always needs to know the whereabouts of these assets. Furthermore it must be able to reproduce, which containers are conveyed by which vehicle or at which customer they are, in order to work efficiently. From the rental of dumpsters to the use of waste containers to commercial collection journeys, acceptance confirmations and sales of materials – everything has to be managed carefully.

Adapting the technology to the requirements

With the aim of providing the most modern solutions, AMCS noticed a need for reliable and durable RFID technology. By using RFID, AMCS can support its clients mastering the challenge to work more efficiently, reduce costs, improve the customer service and at the same time customer loyalty and thus to achieve higher profits. Due to the high complexity of AMCS integrated management solutions the company was interested in a long term partnership with a reliable provider of RFID solutions with tracable good support.

The solutions

Transponders for all container shapes

Before and after emptying the can into the garbage truck the reader registers the weight as well as the tag's GPS coordinates. This information is forwarded to the management office where it is used for decisions concerning route optimization and improved vehicle fleet utilization
AMCS managing director Jimmy Martin was one of the first in this industry to realize the decicive role, RFID technology would play in waste management. „First of all we carried out a one year model scheme with three or four potential providers also from Germany, the Near East and Asia, but HID Global came clearly out on top against all competitors“, says Martin. „Now we use HID equipment almost exclusively. Our three criteria were: sustainablility, quality and responsiveness. In all categories HID took the first place.“ HID's comprehensive product range for AMCS includes the BinTag Unique for standard containers and the PlugTag (both 125 Khz) for special waste, as well as a specially constructed transponder for steel containers. Furthermore there are OEM reader modules with optimized read range and an extended choice of tag options.

Sensors for route optimization

The RFID technology by HIG Global provides competitive advantages in disposal procedures. „All trash cans are equipped with a tag. Before and after emptying the can into the garbage truck the reader registers the weight as well as the tag's GPS coordinates. This information is forwarded to the management office where it is used for decisions concerning route optimization and improved vehicle fleet utilization“, Martin explains. „Some of our local customers also use our RFID technology to detect specific happenings during the procedure such as 'Can overlooked', 'Blocked access' or 'Can polluted'.

Custom billing

One of the most important reasons for using RFID solutions is the big differences concerning waste production among different customers. The volume of waste varies from one householf to the next between 500 and 2 000 kilograms per year. RFID technology offers incentives for recycling, allowing billing based on individual waste production instead of a flatrate-fee for all consumers. „In the United States there's a bonus payment for recycling at some places. This trend is gaining worldwide acceptance“, says Martin.

Targeted analysis of industrial data

Das Sortiment der verschiedenen Tags eignet sich für Standardbehälter und Sonderausführungen. The range of different tags is suitable for standard containers and special constructions. In the field of business and industry characterized by high volumes, priorities are different. „If a truck picks up around 140 containers a day, then weight, time and place are of crucial meaning“, Martin explains. „How often does a container need to be emptied? How much garbage does it contain?“ RFID technology provides this data. It can be analyzed in regular intervals, according to the reporting period. Companies in the construction industry use huge hook-lift containers which are a significant investment for businesses and thus need to be used and detected efficiently. RFID provides the management with the respective information and allows making decisions in terms of route optimization. „Using RFID, the weight of the individual customers' waste as well as the profit margin can be detected“, says Martin. „Furthermore the technology can be used to control payment requests. If a customer did't pay their bills, the disposal company can make that their can won't be picked up.“
