Clothing distribution machines at the Clinic

Fresh clothes within seconds

In May 2012 for the first time, two machines for clothing distribution were put into operation at the new surgery location Eselsberg of the University Hospital Ulm. Every garment is equipped with an RFID tag. Thus, washed laundry can be supplied quickly by the machine. Since autumn 2013 employees of five further clinics of the University Hospital at the location Michelsberg can get their cleaned clothes around the clock from a third machine. The Ulm Wäscherei Bohnet was asked to carry out cleaning services, as well as the installation and filling of the machines.

More than 2,000 employees get their clothes from machines

“The most modern logistics is required to provide so many employees with continuously and reliably cleaned clothes“, explains Hans-Georg Bohnet, who heads the family business with more than 150 employees at the locations Jungingen and Dornstadt. After 1,400 employees at the surgery and dermatology unit at Eselsberg in Ulm were given the option to serve themselves when it comes to clean clothes, the 600 employees at the five clinics in Michelsberg can now do so as well. The third machine, which is filled with 2,200 pieces transported on a 50 meter conveyor belt inside, could already be put into operation in 2013 instead of the scheduled beginning of 2014.

Individual clothing of the employees

Before the machines were put into operation, employees evaluated the clinic employees' size and the frequency they change their clothes. The first fitting and the extrapolation of actual costs for equipping all employees was part of the individual calculation. The gathered data on the required sizes and changing frequencies was stored in the machines' systems.

Fresh clothes within a few seconds

The laundry facility, Bohnet, fills the clothing machines that enable every employee to serve themselves using their personal ID card. Every item of clothing is equipped with a transponder. After the employee logs in, the previously set tops and trousers are handed out. Fresh clothes are only issued if the employees in turn return their contaminated clothes regularly. “For every employee and type of clothing item, the machine issues three clean pieces only. Then it's up to the employee to return their contaminated clothes first. We thus need to stock about twice as many clothes to enable this regular cycle“, explains Hans-Georg Bohnet. Handing out is done within seconds, as the machine automatically selects the shortest way to the required piece of clothing. A touch screen terminal serves for handling as well as an easy-to-operate user interface. The clothing removal and returning points are in each case on the same machine and only a few meters apart. Flat textiles needed by the University Hospital Ulm are cleaned and provided by Bohnet, just like employee clothing.
