Labeling Solution for Clear Traceability

Car parts, watches, clothes, or drugs – nowadays no branch is safe from counterfeiters. Besides a tremendous economic damage, pirate products can also result in a risk to the consumer. The best example is the pharmaceuticals industry. The EU in 2011 thus adopted the EU directive 2011/62/EU for more drug and patient safety. In this context, labeling played a central role, as Kurt Hoppen, Authorized Representative and Managemennt Board Member of Bluhm Systeme explains in an interview.

As the EU directive 2011/62/EU is implemented for the drug market, clear identification becomes obligatory. What is your point of view on that issue?

Among other things, the EU directive provides clear security marking of every packaging for database-supported traceability – key word serialization. The exact implementation details will be determined in spring 2014 by the EU Commission. Securpharm is a German pharmaceuticals industry's initiative. All supply chain participants have practiced a possible realization in detail in a pilot exercise. As identification technology provider, we are actively contributing to the realization of solutions. Still we do not only deal with clear security labeling, but also with tamper evidence, which the directive also includes.

Which solutions does Bluhm provide for serialization?

There are different labeling technologies available to apply serialized codes on labels and product packagings. As Bluhm's product range contains inkjet printers, direct thermal transfer printers, laser writers, as well as labelers – with and without RFID – we can bring our expertise and products at every point in the production and packaging process: at packaging, bundling, or paletting. It depends on the application, when which technology is most practicable. Printing and dispensing speed is an important criterion, for instance. In order to support pharmaceuticals companies, we have developed a solution approach for a space-saving integrated tamper-evident label together with partners. We're talking about a self-adhesive label which seals the packaging. The compact labeling unit can be integrated into existing data matrix stations or weighing systems.

Which role will RFID play with regard to clear product identification?

Tamper evidence is going to become a more important issue. Due to the requirements just mentioned, RFID could play a role as well. RFID technology can be used for serialization, as well as anti-fraud protection, and complement other labeling technologies in the future. The right mixture of the different technologies is important here, to achieve the highest possible security for certain applications. With regard to bank notes, various security features have established themselves, which only confirm the product's genuineness when considered in combination.

In the field of pharmaceuticals, RFID is already used to an increasing extent, in addition to holograms, UV-reflective surfaces, and more. In contrast to the known 1D and 2D codes, RFID provides multiple advantages: A transponder is also a data carrier, which is why it can contain further information for identification and authentication itself. Within the supply chain, the data can be adapted dynamically and counterfeiting thus made difficult. This is all possible with RFID, without the existence of the data carrier on or in the packaging becomes obvious. The more difficult it is for counterfeiters, to copy the right current data. This will become even more interesting, when „Printed Electronics“ technology will be introduced in the labels sector. The vision is to apply chip and antenna and maybe even additional sensors in a printing process. As a result, costs are significantly reduced and new applications are created. There are attempts to create an intelligent pharmaceuticals folding box, for instance, which is to register, whether the patient has taken his pill. If he forgets to take it, he is to be reminded by his smartphone automatically.

How do you think of the connection between IT and identification technology?

In order to achieve higher efficiency and less costs, identification technology network is becoming more and more important. Key word „Digital Factory“ or „Industry 4.0“. A novelty in this field is our new Cockpit software, for instance. It can monitor and control Ethernet-capable facilities of Bluhm Systeme, simply via internet browser on smartphone or PC. Device status, productivity, and more can be retrieved and accessed any time.
