With an annual traffic of 2.4 billion passengers, Moscow Metro is one of the biggest metro systems in the world. All types of tickets were already replaced with RFID based smart cards in 2008. Since 2013, a new generation of contactless tickets has been rolled out – one of the biggest transport card applications in Europe.

Mikron, the largest producer and exporter of microchips and RFID products, as a part of RTI holding, has won the tender run by Moscow Metro for production and delivery of Troyka tickets – plastic contactless smart-cards for fare payments. The contactless transport tags production project is the most large-scale transport cards application in Europe.

The volumes of supplies of contactless tickets for Moscow Metro reach up to 32 million tickets per month. The volume of the lot that was run in the project amounts to 5.5 million pieces.

The Moscow Metro started operating in 1935 with a length of 11 kilometers connecting 13 stations. Today, with 12 lines and a total of 190 stations, it transports passengers in a rail network of 317 kilometers. On average, 6.73 million people travelled with the Moscow Metro every day in 2012 while the highest daily ridership that year was 9.28 million.
