„RFID technology has proven its worth. Now it's about fine tuning. The next trends are called miniaturization, combination with sensors, NFC, and printed electronics.“ - Thorsten Wischnewski, Rako Security Label „RFID technology has proven its worth. What innovative new developments and labeling options does Rako pursue in retail with regard to transponder technology?

What I think is: RFID is just the beginning. Sensors could be the next step. In a current research project we are intensively dealing with the topic of wearable electronics. Tags with RFID interface that are permanently integrated into garments might enable new functions in the future. An additional benefit, we already offer, is tamper evidence for anti theft labels. When the tags are removed from the article, an alarm is triggered via a special EPC event.

What are the labeling options for starters and those who want to switch the technology?

Thorsten WischnewskiThorsten WischnewskiBasically there are two scenarios to start or switch to using RFID technology: They depend on the use of disposable or reusable tags. For each scenario the corresponding transponders are available: self-adhesive labels, hang tags, sewn in labels or plastic tags. The easiest start for textile retail is probably classic article security using circulating hard tags combined with RFID. Particularly for SMEs or boutiques that want to take advantage of shop-related inventory replenishment, the first step would be to attach combined hard tags to the garments in the distribution warehouse or the shop and to link them with RFID. This model can be expanded as required with hang tags or other labels, up to source tagging. Then the retailer can benefit from all the cost advantages.

What special solutions outside the field of retail is Rako currently working on?

At the moment we are developing special, very secure solutions for car identification, as well as interesting labeling solutions for flight luggage. We are also going to offer new special transponders for logistics. Still the need for special solutions also grows in the field of healthcare. We are working on flexible labels to retrofit medical products in laboratories or clinics that can be printed on-site to mark difficult containers variably.
