How do you see the market trend in the medium-term future?

“The conformance tests are to a large extent completed, and the GSMA-documents are filled with information. However, in terms of interoperability, there is still potential for new test cases, and thus potential for new tools. Regarding technology, the future will be exciting. Real end-to-end testing remains a challenge for NFC-services. Secondly, the eUICC (embedded UICC) is still under discussion and alongside with it a new system architecture which will also require a new approach to testing. With a view to market development; I also see a fragmented environment in the future: I expect the physical Secure Element to stay existent. The MNOs will stick to their SIM-card running systems and the banking sector will hold onto HCE. I cannot see a space for SD-cards in the mediumterm future.”

VTT develops and produces highend lamination plates with innovative security features for the production of cards worldwide.

ID-documents and security badges must necessarily feature state-of-the-art technology to be as secure as possible from forgery. The basis for the production of a card is the lamination plate. In card production, security features in different gradations are integrated into the card and onto its surface. As worldwide leaders in this sector of technology, VTT develops and manufactures high-end lamination plates for governmental and private companies. Using innovative developments, VTT wants to revolutionize some of the market fields regarding production efficiencies.

NFC Handset Conformance Tests

Robust and validated tests are the basis for secure NFC-based services

The introduction of NFC-services was a fast-paced development. However, these services can only work reliably when the technology and interfaces – in particular, those concerning the UICC as a secure element – are adequately tested. These tests for mobile devices, which not only thoroughly test the individual interfaces, but also their interplay regarding the application, are now mandatory.

The demands for security and efficiency in the global supply chain are growing constantly. Establishing standards is one of the major tasks and still a longlasting process. “We are going to see the complementary use of different AutoID technologies for a long time“, says Detlef Aßmus, HLI.

Big potential to optimize supply chain is ascribed to passive temperature loggers – But where are they actually already being used?

Caen RFID – known for stationary RFID-readers, and small, compact mobile handheld readers – is also well positioned in a field in which there are not many competitors active: passive RFID-sensor technology. “The RFID-technology provides, coupled with an innovative and – by now also cost-effective – possibility to monitor temperature-sensitive supply chains”, says David Pallassini of Caen RFID. In the interview with “RFID im Blick”, he tells about developments and the potential of a combination of sensors with standardized UHF-RFID-technology. He further elaborates the temperature logger’s benefits in global cold chains.

The changes in industry and logistics are based on increasing usage of information- and communications technology

Industry 4.0 is not something that happens in isolation in one branch. Changes in individual private customers' behavior strongly affects the developments in logistics and industry”, says Prof. Dr. Schenk. However, in his opinion, Germany’s position in the international competition has to be secured, especially by globally acting companies. In the Interview with “RFID im Blick”, he is exemplary in presenting the connection of changes in different fields; he explains what role logistics are taking in the environment of industrial evolution, and illustrates why a heating fitter can profit from the technologies of Industry 4.0.

In the highly automated automotive industry, the track & trace functions of intelligent identification systems play an important role. High operating temperatures are often a major challenge.

RFID systems are typically used in automated manufacturing processes where different product versions are manufactured and conveyed along the same production line. These processes include paintshop lines and metallurgical powder sintering in automotive manufacturing.

New UHF-reading devices featuring special tools speed up integration and reduce project costs

RFID-systems in the ultra-high frequency range have been revolutionizing the management of production- and logistics chains for about ten years. However, apart from the benefits which include cheap labels and high reading ranges, UHF-systems have a number of technical challenges. A new device generation that integrates helpful tools enables a quick realization of UHF-projects while minimizing downtimes.

In order to uphold Germany’s position in the competitive international industry, companies, organizations and associations, politicians, and science have to work hand in hand.

„Ideas regarding Industry 4.0 are already the reality in some German industries. To be able to meet international competition, a change on many levels is needed“, says Prof. Dr. Alexander Pflaum. „It is of importance that all parties involved – major enterprises, SME, politicians, and research – pursue the same goal. This is the only way to use manufacturing technologies whose integration would overtax one single company alone.“ In the interview with „RFID im Blick“ Alexander Pflaum talks about factors that could secure the competitive position of Germany as a top industrial location.

Prof. Alexander Pflaum, head of the Center for Intelligent Objects (Zentrum für Intelligente Objekte ZIO) at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, in an interview with Jan Phillip Denkers, „RFID im Blick“
