In 2017, Dana implemented a new MES system to meet growing customer demand. Along with the new MES system, DANA began using RAIN RFID for 100% traceability through the manufacturing process. In this process, every DANA part is individually scanned at each station in the process, and as a batch when leaving the facility on a pallet.

After thoroughly testing a large variety of off-the-shelf RAIN RFID tags, DANA was unable to suitable solution for tagging of automotive parts. Off-the-shelf tags either failed testing or were too large and expensive to meet stringent product requirements and price targets.

RFID parts identification is the first building block of an initiative consisting of 20 digitization projects

An ambitious roadmap: By 2025, Mercedes-Benz Vans wants to complete a digital transformation of all their production sites. The goal: Managing the complexity emerging from an increased variety of models while optimising the flexibility and efficiency of the supply chain and manufacturing. The division of Daimler will spend over 200 million Euros over the next 8 years on its digitization projects. In an interview with RFID & Wireless IoT Global, Michael Trunschke, Mercedes-Benz Vans, and Holger Seidel, Fraunhofer IFF, talk about the RFID parts identification solution at the Ludwigsfelde plant – one of the first implemented building blocks and a strategic step towards intelligent production at Mercedes-Benz Vans.

Secure tool identification for 3,000 tools in 1.6 and 2.0 liter motor production

In a pilot project at the Volkswagen engine plant in Salzgitter, one of the flexible production lines is equipped with digital tool coding using BALLUFF RFID to verify the possibility of reducing tool changing times and making tool handling faster, simpler and more reliable.

The decision makers knew that they have laid the foundation for a great deal more valuable information with Tool-ID from BALLUFF.

Seat focuses on a passive UHF solution for optimised handling processes of finished vehicles in production and logistics

The Spanish car manufacturer uses RFID in almost all handling processes on the premises – whether in business logistics, in production, or in loading processes. The aim of the different RFID applications is to obtain realtime information concerning the movements of the vehicles in order to improve the use of space and resources. Manuel Medina, Seat, speaks with „RFID & Wireless IoT Global“ in detail about areas of application, advantages, and challenges of RFID use.

Shared services and UHF RFID technology are the basis of a concept for a globally standardised process.

In order to fulfil the increasing demands in the field of intralogistics, Volkswagen Group already successfully deploys RFID technology in various applications for many years. The company developed a concept for a globally standardised process for the registration of load carriers, specifically for load carrier management.

Varta Microbattery uses a wide range of printing and labeling solutions from NOVEXX Solutions to increase productivity and reduce costs

In total, 32 NOVEXX Solutions machines are used for printing, dispensing, and labeling across an area of 13,700 square metres over 15 packaging and production lines to label packages and pallets at the Varta Microbattery site in Ellwangen. The battery manufacturer saves considerable time on set-up and therefore saves costs, reduces labeling errors down to almost zero, and continues to improve on already high levels of quality.

In an industry first in the UK, Paragon has optimized internal processes with RFID

riving efficiency with RFID: UK-based Paragon Automotive wanted to increase the visibility within the automotive supply chain while gaining control over the internal processes at the same time. A passive UHF-RFID-Solution not only enhanced speed and accuracy across the entire supply chain, but also laid the foundation for a glass pipeline between manufacturer, logistics provider, and dealer. Chris Higgins, Group IT Director Paragon Automotive, speaks with “RFID im Blick Global” about the reasons for turning to RFID. He not only focuses on the tagging process, but also highlights the resulting benefits for both Paragon and its clients.

How UHF-RFID technology optimizes processes and product quality in the production of automotive exterior parts

Arenowned manufacturer of automotive exterior parts is relying on new RFID technology in the UHF range for the production and distribution of bumpers and sills. This facilitates the coordination and optimization of all workflows along the entire value chain, thereby consolidating its top position in terms of process and product quality. The absolutely successful introduction of RFID in this area has already resulted in multiple follow-up projects for the globally operating group.

Daimler uses RFID productively. Plans and projects for applying RFID to numerous other processes are currently being drafted.

Will the next step in series production succeed, and how can a cross-company RFID application be managed?

Positioning techniques, airbag assembly documentation, and RFID Kanban, in addition to the cross-OEM-supplier RFID project: the RFID experts at Daimler in Sindelfingen are busy thinking about numerous processes. The technical feasibility has been demonstrated recently in a proof of concept. The connection to existing backend systems as well as tests within a real production environment will follow. First applications have already been implemented. “The RFID technology has now reached a level of maturity where sustainable process benefits are now feasible,“ says Thomas Gintschel. At the same time, RFID know-how has become so widespread that it can be realistically determined in which processes RFID use is sensible, and in which other technologies should be favoured. Thomas Gintschel and Albert Kronmüller spoke with ‘RFID im Blick Global’ about the applications that are already in use, and whether the applications tested under real conditions are close to serial production.
