Real-time 3D-asset- and tool tracking makes processes safer and opens up a wide range for lean management

Highest standards in quality to protect human lives: ”Should a screwdriver get lost in an airplane, it may cause fatal damages if the plane leaves the ground. This scenario must be prevented by all means – RFID supports us here. Furthermore, to streamline our production with RFID, we are increasing our processes’ transparency and are promoting innovation.” From individual RFID-tags applied to a tool, to the smart factory, Marc Lorentz of Airbus Operations, tells in this interview, how Airbus , with RFID technology as the key enabler, optimizes Smart Factory’s business processes, insures quality and reduces costs at the same time.

Concept Rollout

A Global Vision, One Unique Solution

Volvo Car Gent has been working on RFID for more than 20 years and has spent a lot of research, time and engagement on finding a concept that fits for an overall solution. Once more, Volvo proves to be a pioneer in implementing RFID by rolling out the concept to the production sites in China and Sweden.

Manufacture of Corrugated Board and Cartons

Cartons always produced and delivered “just in time“

Fork lifts with RFID readers and touchscreens, antennas in the production facility, RFID gates tested by customers and external suppliers – The company Klingele Papierwerke invests great effort for a product which is often only considered to be waste in the end: Packaging solutions made of corrugated board. This consideration was not a barrier for Klingele to further develop RFID solutions together with the system house Stonegarden. The positive experience since the introduction of the technology in 2008 in the finished goods warehouse were reason enough to push the further use. In which processes is RFID used meanwhile, which added value does the technology provide for logistics and delivery quality, and which further solutions might be realized in the future: that is what Christian Stangrecki, Central Logistics Director at Klingele talked about in the interview with “RFID im Blick“.

RFID in the automobile industry

In the year 1966, Opel built a completely new test center in Rodgau/Dudenhofen, 50 kilometers from Rüsselsheim. At that time, 33 kilometers of streets and tracks were constructed to test the vehicles' physical limits and durability under extreme conditions. Since the beginning of the first decade of the second millenium, the number of tracks at the test center has been growing by 50 percent so that the area currently includes more than 60 kilometers of test tracks which are going to be expanded to 100 kilometers in the next few years. The track types range from comfort to noise measuring tracks, to torture and mountain routes which are recreations of actually existing streets and serpentines, to high speed tracks.

“Despite the high traffic density, we never had a traffic jam at the entry points to the single tracks“ reports Dr. Matthias Schollmaier, Opel Test Center director, during a site visit by “RFID im Blick“.

Turck's RFID technology is installed in a production facility for Micro Gas Generators (MGG) of IMA Automation Amberg

In seatbelt tensioners and headrests Micro Gas Generators ensure that vehicle safety systems react instantly in case of an emergency. Therefore the capsules are filled with an exactly defined amount of powder in a fully automated production facility of IMA Automation Amberg. The assembly facility manufacturer makes use of Turck's RFID system using read/write heads approved for dust ex areas in order to ensure continuous and safe identification.

ATEX UHF-RFID

BIG BAG tracking and tracing in explosive atmospheres

For granulate production in the chemical industry additives are used which are filled into bags, transported and stored. An existing additive tracking system of a chemical company located in North Rhine-Westphalia still suffered from weaknesses because staff scanned the big bags using handheld devices based on HF RFID. As identification gaps kept occuring the company looked for an automated UHF RFID solution to read the big bags which are to be identified from a greater distance. Kathrein RFID certified ATEX products marketed by Tectus and designed in cooperation with Kathrein RFID were selected.

Automotive and NFC

Challenges for a generic NFC platform in order to achieve series maturity for use in automobiles

Since 2005 many BMW research developments have been focussing on NFC already. From the beginning the technology was examined from two different points: On the one hand practical developments such as the „key of the future“ were used to demonstrate how NFC-based solutions result in practical user benefits. On the other hand a cross series NFC infrastructure was developed at the same time which can be used for series production. Currenty an automotive suited platform ready for series production is being initiated at BMW. The objective is a generic platform which can be expanded by optional functions in the future.

Sieving safely

Dispersible polymer powders must be manufactured in different grain sizes according to different application purposes. To guarantee and document proper manufacure Wacker in Burghausen has been identifying the mesh size in its tumbler screening machines using Turck's RFID system BL ident which is approved to be used in areas potentially subject to dust explosion. Encouraged by positive experiences the company now equips the first coupling stations with the system.

RFID solution for motor production

Since 2004 VEM, manufacturer of system and engine solutions, has been testing the implementation of RFID tags to collect data right on the motor. In the year 2005 the technology was introduced. The latest transponder generation allows users to read and write detailed product information, proofs of maintenance and custom data during operation without further documents. At the production location in Wernigerode VEM serially equips the newly developed Transnorm motors of the size series 400 with RFID, smaller series can be optionally equipped. „The demand for Memory Motors increases“, reports Sebastian Chyla, graduate engineer, VEM, during the visit of „RFID im Blick“ at the plant in Wernigerode.

Many labels, one solution

A constituent element of the science project RFID based Automotive Network (RAN) was to check which hardware is required to reliably detect vehicles with different transponder positions in logistic processes. BLG, Daimler, Opel, Siemens and BIBA performed tests identifying different vehicles passing differently configured RFID gates to find the most economical solution.
