Blog RFID & WIoT | Maintenance Page 1

Inspection and maintenance of devices, buildings, and vehicles are the prerequisites for all business operations. Because of the rising number of assets which have to be maintained, and the growing reliance on external service providers, maintenance processes are steadily becoming more complex. RFID and wireless IoT can create transparency and unlock benefits through access control, proof-of-presence, condition monitoring and predictive maintenance, timestamping and automated billing. This blog contains reports and use cases from users.

Mold-ID from Balluff forges transparency for the use of injection molds

Predictive maintenance extends the service life of production systems and components, supports reliable operation, increases productivity, and improves cost-effectiveness. This is especially true for the molds in the machines. They normally experience extensive wear and have a non-trivial impact on production costs. These were the reasons behind the choice of Switzerland-based Max Riner AG to optimize the use of its injection molds with Mold-ID from Balluff. The standalone system can be easily adapted to each machine without having to interact with the control system, enabling condition-based maintenance via industrial RFID technology.

Consistent monitoring with RFID preventively protects switchgears from overheating and prevents consequential damage

A breakdown of a switchgear system in a computer centre, power plant, or chemical factory leads to fatal consequences: possible results are not only high costs, but also great danger for the workers. “In order to protect modern switchgears with high possibility of failure, permanent thermo-observation with RFID is the only way to guarantee monitoring during operation,” says Michael Krämer of the company Köhl s.à.r.l. As a service, the manufacturer of switchgears equips all their new plants with an RFID sensor system.

Using RFID technology, every asset of Copenhagen’s drinking water network is registered and centrally managed by Hofor (Copenhagen Energy)

Each year, 50 billion litres of water flow through Copenhagen’s 2,000 kilometers of water network, supplying one million residents in the metropolitan area with their daily water needs. This is a mammoth task for regional water provider Hofor (Copenhagen Energy) and for their service staff, who regularly maintain 160,000 valves across the city. Hofor uses strict controls to ensure high quality fresh water standards and currently employs the integrated RFID solution of Danish system integrator ‘Veriloc Automation’, as part of its web-based operation.

Aviation Industry: Maintenance in airplane manufacturing

Lash & Lift retrofitted a total of 2 400 components to simplify inspection and documentation

„On one hand, we wanted to offer a better service to Airbus that would distinguish us clearly from competitors. On the other hand, it made following the legal requirements easier for our test technicians“, explains Lars Schulz, Branch Manager Lash & Lift, about the implementation of a new maintenance solution at the Airbus factory in Stade, beginning in 2012. „Identify, activate, test, document, archive – these steps stay the same, whereas the time factor shrinks significantly with RFID-based testing and documentation.“ In an interview with „RFID im Blick“ , he explains with great detail the necessary requirements and process conversions implementing the RUD-ID-System.

Wind energy plants: engine pods at the test facility

The Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology (IWES) engineers the first large scale test stand for complete engine pods of wind energy plants in Germany by the end of 2014. Provided with ten megawatts, propulsion power manufacturers will be enabled to check and optimize their plant concepts. „Developing wind energy plants requires large amounts of measurement data at very high clock rates. RFID could provide developers with new options for measurement data acquisition“ explains Andreas Ruhle, scientist at the Fraunhofer IWES in the interview with „RFID im Blick“.
