Tracking of dental instruments improves patient safety and improves hygiene

Hygiene, inventory accuracy, patient safety: medical facilities and hospitals have to follow many regulations regarding clinical practice and keep track of their medical equipment at the same time. The School of Oral Health Care at the University of Copenhagen counts on an RFID-based tracking solution to meet these requirements. Most instruments are tagged. Bo Danielsen from the University of Copenhagen talks to „RFID im Blick Global“ about the use and benefits of RFID for staff and patients alike.

Together with other partners, Turck Korea has implemented a complete system – from the production plant right through to the dispatch warehouse

Counterfeit pharmaceutical products present health authorities and competition regulators with a great number of problems. For this reason, in future the entire production and sales chain of pharmaceutical products will be made fully transparent. Together with other partners, Turck Korea introduced this process, known as serialization, for pharmaceutical manufacturer, Daewon Pharm Co. Ltd. The cloud-based solution records the drugs from the production stage right through to storage in the dispatch warehouse.

Idesco installation offers a high level of security and a full access control system

When it was time to replace the old access control system, the Norwegian Rikshospitalet (Oslo University Hospital) looked for an installation that was cost-effective and easy to handle but also provided high security standards and a built-in option for future updates. Ultimately, Idesco’s 8 CD 2.0 Slim Pin DESFire readers met the hospital‘s needs best. Hence, G4S Secure Solutions AS, the largest security services provider in the world, deployed eight hundred of Idesco readers in Oslo University Hospital’s new access control system.

A new level of patient care and providing of OR status reports with UHF readers from Feig Electronic

At hospital, non-mobile in-patients spend most of their time in their rooms. An assignment to their patient files is easy, as long as they stay where they are. Out-patients, for example, getting chemotherapy in an Oncology Centre, or patients who need surgery, need to be clearly identified. Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre based in Toronto, Canada, uses RFID technology to safely identify patients, avoid confusion and to optimise management processes. In an interview with ‘RFID im Blick’ Ellie Lee, Manager OR Information Management Services, explains how RFID improves communication with members of the patients family.

RTLS in the emergency department

No ‘Big Brother’! Locating without surveillance

“An RFID system for tracking people and equipment should never be implemented without the acceptance and support of the staff.” Right at the beginning,Thomas R. Hellmich, M.D. at Mayo Clinic based the considerations to improve patient care with RFID for the emergency clinic on this premise. The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, operates one of the most modern emergency centres in the US. More than 70,000 patients are treated annually. Time is most valuable to create the best possible patient care. “Staff wanted a mechanism to help them spend more time with patients and less time searching for each other, patients and equipment”, adds Kalyan S. Pasupathy, Ph.D. at Mayo Clinic.

The constantly growing number of temperature-controlled air cargo increases demand for temperature monitoring – RFID is a part of the solution

Martin Stratmann, DHL Thermonet Product Manager Germany, anticipates that the demand for temperature- controlled air cargo will continue to increase, especially for pharmaceutical products. The logistics provider has just expanded its capacity with a new 600-square-metre logistics centre at the Frankfurt hub – it is one of 90 Thermonet stations worldwide where RFID sensor technology has become part of the transport solution for life sciences and healthcare products.

In order to optimise and simplify the management of around 12,000 laundry items a day, the University Hospital Ljubljana makes use of RFID

At a time when the need to minimise costs is such a prime consideration within in the healthcare industry, it is essential to make use of IT solutions that improve internal processes. As one of the largest institutions in Slovenia, the University Hospital Ljubljana has responded to this situation and has recently introduced an RFID solution for tracking work wear. The aim was to simplify the issue and return of work wear from and to the laundry service, and at the same time to improve working conditions. The project has been successfully introduced with the help of Slovenian system integrator Špica International.

Worldwide projects and investigations of Fresenius Kabi demonstrate the benefits of RFID technology, especially for the logistics of blood bags

Around 29 million blood bags and packed red blood cells are processed annually in Europe. Using RFID for identification in the logistics process, more than 400 million scans can be saved! There is an enormous potential for optimisation for blood donor services by using this technology, as Dr. Armin Reidel, Fresenius Kabi, explains. The technical requirements have been addressed by Fresenius Kabi and its partner Biolog-id in large-scale projects in Mexican hospitals and Italian blood banks, which are already showing benefits in practice.

Unique in German-speaking countries: The RFID multifunction cards used by Tyrol Clinic employees are the basis of a comprehensive service and security system

Since 2003, achieving a comprehensive security system has been a management priority for the Tyrol Clinics hospital group, with the hospital board establishing a successful, dedicated unit to manage all aspects of security in one place. Tyrol Clinics is now a pioneer of future- and needs-based security management in German-speaking coun- Clinic Safety Issues tries. A first system was implemented 15 years ago to make use of electronic access solutions, and now includes self-service dispensers for physical keys, drugs and post, as well as priority control of lifts. The RFID employee card is used as an identification medium for every application, allowing every point of entry to be strictly controlled.

With the development of an RFID application to optimise processes in the OR and ICU, Draeger have hit the mark – the demand for this solution is increasing

Is the breathing circuit connected properly? When does the flow sensor need to be replaced? These and other questions designed to optimise processes are answered by an RFID application using ventilation and anesthesia accessories produced by Draeger. “RFID technology is the basis for numerous ways of optimising processes using different ventilation and anesthesia accessories. Possible confusion is minimised, exchange intervals are displayed automatically and patient parameter settings are stored and transferred between the different devices – this supports safe work processes, even when things get hectic in the operating room or intensive care unit. The RFID technology contributes significantly to better working comfort,” explains Andreas Otto, who is responsible for the RFID product development at Draeger.
