Smart cards with fingerprint sensors, Bluetooth cards for indoor RTLS

B-Id wants to step out of the “classic” smart card segment of the card market with innovative features

Until about a year ago the hardware development of smart card applications had stagnated, says Yiwen Jin, CEO of B-Id. “Display cards and fingerprint cards for ID, bank, and access applications and Bluetooth cards for indoor RTLS and secure temperature monitoring of transports regarding medical products are now pushing the card industry forward.” Whereas innovative applications have been covered almost solely via software in the past, projects in Asia and the US that focus on the technological refinement of the cards are currently underway. In an interview with “RFID im Blick Global”, Yiwen Jin talks about technological updates regarding display and fingerprint cards as well as newly developed Bluetooth cards. Millions of units of cards that are needed in different projects prove that real requirements are being implemented and not just technical “gimmicks”.

A use case: All sixteen fire extinguishers in an eight-floor office building are scheduled for regular inspection. They have been outfitted with HID Trusted Tags. Before beginning the inspection, the service technician checks into the service application with the device by a simple tap using his mobile device. This way, building management can be certain every fire extinguisher has been inspected and is up to code – and the maintenance provider can bill this service precisely.

RFID and IoT pacesetter Smartrac is providing high-performance blending equipment manufacturer Vitamix with innovative Near Field Communication (NFC) technology that takes customer convenience and operational safety to a new level.

Officially launched on December 26, 2016, and soon showcased at the upcoming tradeshow CES in Las Vegas (January 5-8, 2017), Vitamix’s new Ascent and Venturist blenders utilize Smartrac’s NFC technology to surpass conventional blending machines in both functionality and safety. With NFC readers built into the appliance base, custom-built NFC tags embedded in the supplied and separately sold containers and cups can automatically change multiple operating parameters (up to 140!) by just putting the container on the appliance base. Thus, the NFC solution can modify program settings, button functions, ramp rates or maximum time settings making it easier than ever to prepare steaming-hot soups, frozen sorbets, delicious smoothies and other recipes that provide culinary experiences unknown before. The NFC solution could also modify machine settings and operating windows for attachments that have not yet been invented, underlining the power of the new SELF-DETECT™ Technology” concept provided by Vitamix.
