Affordable universal encoding

Compact personalization machines for the card and ticketing market are plentiful and packaged elegantly for the desktop market but their reliance on home-grown expertise in the form of encoders or print modules is often their shortfall. They are relatively simple to use but tend to be expensive to operate when considering their consumables – and of course the majority of them just cannot process paper tickets or cater for different MagStripe or RFID encoding schemes. Servicing of these units is also a factor not to be ignored – especially when considering the quality of encoding if it is to fulfill ISO standards, for example.

Get in and drive off

The market for contactless payment systems is growing. At the same time the range of applications for RFID readers is getting wider, whether for payment with “Tap & Go“ at the vending machines or for credit card-assisted ticketing in public transport. “Ticketing growth is expected, especially in vending,“ says Andreas Löw, Feig Electronic. The reading device manufacturer is preparing for the burgeoning market with a new generation of readers, which support contactless credit cards and NFC applications. Particular attention is being directed at vending applications and open-loop ticketing.

VTT develops and produces highend lamination plates with innovative security features for the production of cards worldwide.

ID-documents and security badges must necessarily feature state-of-the-art technology to be as secure as possible from forgery. The basis for the production of a card is the lamination plate. In card production, security features in different gradations are integrated into the card and onto its surface. As worldwide leaders in this sector of technology, VTT develops and manufactures high-end lamination plates for governmental and private companies. Using innovative developments, VTT wants to revolutionize some of the market fields regarding production efficiencies.

Ultrathin flexible silicon chips and inlays raise the possibilities for the integration of electronics into payment- and ID-cards such as ID-documents and passports to the next level

The way for future generations of cards has been paved: „Multifunctional interactive smart cards with a display, touchpad and keyboard will soon be realizable“, says Christine Kallmayer, Fraunhofer IZM, in an interview with „RFID im Blick“. In the past few years, landmark results in the chip- and substrate technology have been achieved to integrate thin flexible displays such as electrochromic or E-Ink into RFID-cards. With the design of the cards being so thin, complex circuits are realizable too. „Today, it is possible to laminate real, complex electronic modules in cards.“ Regarding the integration technology, from the research point of view, the foundations of the „Next Generation ID“ have been laid. It is now about transferring these foundations into market maturity – and above all, cost-effective producible products.

Christine Kallmayer, Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration, IZM, in an interview with Dunja Kandel, “RFID im Blick“
