Traceability from production to the store

In the year 2012, the strategic decision was made at Migros to tag all containers with RFID-labels until 2016. The Genossenschaft Migros Ostschweiz is using RFID-container labelling as a basis to optimize its supply chain visibility. A first goal is to thoroughly track the processes of meat supply from the production until the supermarket.

Pleased rental car customers thanks to RFID

The car rental company Sixt is one of the biggest German companies by turnover in the sector and active world-wide, with more than 2000 rental stations. The car rental market is dynamic; the competitors are on the spot – at some German major airports, customers have the opportunity to choose from ten different car hire companies. The customers’ satisfaction regarding the service is therefore of high importance in the competition. In order to considerably improve the processes of the handing over and the taking back of vehicles, starting in February 2014, Sixt has rolled out an innovative UHF-RFID-application in ten countries. In the interview with „RFID im Blick“, Alexander Boone of Sixt tells that already after a short period of time measurable improvements could be noticed.

Selective Identification

By installing an ultra-high frequency industrial RFID system from BALLUFF onto an assembly line for heating boilers, the WESO foundry, a member of the Viessmann group, has solved one of the most difficult problems for determining OEE key performance indicators.

Determining OEE (overall equipment effectiveness) key performance indicators always proves to be extremely difficult if detecting and comparing parameters using a control system is not possible in process flows. This is frequently true for assembly lines with primarily manual or semi-automated processes. Additional measurement systems - such as compressed air flow sensors or electricity meters whose measured values, along with other parameters, could be assigned to individual products using a controller - often cannot be integrated in these cases. As part of a ReVista project, Michael Kreide, the responsible department manager at WESO for IH management, actively sought the most difficult range to measure on an assembly line for heating boilers. He did this in order to implement existing monitoring of the energy management system using component identification at every point down to the product level.

Retain an overview of more than 200 000 containers with RFID

For the efficient real-time supply management of more than 200 000 circulating RTIs (returnable transport items), at the beginning of the year, Dutch company Varoda Rent has put a UHF-solution at the loading ramps of its warehouse into operation.

Transparent Production with the Airbus Business Radar

Highest quality standards in order to protect human lives: „Should a screwdriver get lost in an airplane, it may cause fatal damages if the plane leaves the ground. This scenario must be prevented by all means – RFID supports us here. Furthermore, to streamline our production with RFID, we are increasing our processes’ transparency and are promoting innovation.“ From individual RFID-tags applied to a tool, to the smart factory, Marc Lorentz of Airbus Operations, tells in this interview, how Airbus, with RFID technology as the key enabler, optimizes Smart Factory’s business processes, insures quality and reduces costs at the same time.

What innovative new developments and labeling options does Rako pursue in retail with regard to transponder technology?

What I think is: RFID is just the beginning. Sensors could be the next step. In a current research project we are intensively dealing with the topic of wearable electronics. Tags with RFID interface that are permanently integrated into garments might enable new functions in the future. An additional benefit, we already offer, is tamper evidence for anti theft labels. When the tags are removed from the article, an alarm is triggered via a special EPC event.

Making Our Cities Smart

In the heads of some public administrators, mayors, public transportation managers or bankers, the future has already begun: For some time now, they have been focusing closely on the question of how mobile phones or multifunctional smartcards can be used not just for payment purposes, but for a whole range of other citizen services. NFC (Near Field Communication) – a cutting edge technology that enables secure wireless data transfer – plays a decisive role in this field as a technology component for a wide spectrum of mobile solutions.

RFID at the Melting Point

Increased process security, constant dosage accuracy, and complete batch tracking at the foundry Karl Casper

High quality industry and art casting products are manufactured in the foundry located in Baden-Württemberg. Pig iron and steel scrap are used to manufacture construction parts for tools and special machines. „We used to collect the data manually on a PC when we assembled the molt material“, explains Technical Manager Malte Lüking. Nowadays, an RFID application allows for automatic transport container detection, the allocation of batches, as well as virtual process mapping.

Container identification using special transponders in a metal environment

A manufacturer of construction site containers detects more than 150,000 containers using a flat and yet robust transponder by HID Global

A trend towards ever smaller RFID transponders can be seen accross different applications. Why then does HID Global bring a transponder to the market that is rather a contrast to that trend with a width of more than ten centimeters? „Special requirements ask for special solutions“, is how Guido Kuhrmann, Sales Director IDT at HID Global, sums up the answer in a simple formula in dialogue with „RFID im Blick“. HID Global encountered special requirements at a container manufacturer that produces, sells, and rents containers for construction sites, for instance. In order to optimize all processes regarding the rental business, a UHF RFID transponder was developed by HID Global together with a manufacturer and a system integrator. The transponder meets all requirements in terms of design, robustness, function on metal, and high read range. HID Global sees growing potential in the field of metal containers or related fields, which is why the individually developed transponder was integrated into the standard portfolio.
