Payment Goes Contactless

Contactless payment is gaining more and more momentum in daily life. Furthermore, the number of potential applications in all-around everyday scenarios is growing steadily. Frank Ludwig, Head of Segment Banking & Health, exceet Card Group, predicts a total volume growth of nine to twelve percent by 2015 for the Smart Cards market. The main segments are telecommunication, healthcare, and banking. Driven by the banking industry, two significant lighthouse projects are taking place in Germany, one with millions of Dual Interface cards already in use. Also, mobile payment solutions such as “Mobile Pockets“ may soon become more popular.

Aviation Industry: Maintenance in airplane manufacturing

Lash & Lift retrofitted a total of 2 400 components to simplify inspection and documentation

„On one hand, we wanted to offer a better service to Airbus that would distinguish us clearly from competitors. On the other hand, it made following the legal requirements easier for our test technicians“, explains Lars Schulz, Branch Manager Lash & Lift, about the implementation of a new maintenance solution at the Airbus factory in Stade, beginning in 2012. „Identify, activate, test, document, archive – these steps stay the same, whereas the time factor shrinks significantly with RFID-based testing and documentation.“ In an interview with „RFID im Blick“ , he explains with great detail the necessary requirements and process conversions implementing the RUD-ID-System.

Norwegian food retailer controls material flow with RFID-tagged pallets

Coop Norge has been using RFID-technology to track pallets in their own intra logistics processes for about a year. RFID-technology is a part of the system to control the material flow from the receipt of goods until they leave the new logistics center near Oslo.

Virtual processes equal physical processes

Since the RAN-project, Bosch is driving a circle of innovation consisting of data collection, data evaluation and retroactive optimization of logistic processes

Between 2008 and 2013, the number of RFID-based bookings rose from almost zero to circa 20 million bookings in productive systems of the 16 factories in four business segments and different fields of activity. Manual processes are further and further digitalized and visualized virtually. „Where an employee used to fill out a paper, RFID-based scan processes exist now. From the logistics center to the assembly is transparent and visible at any time“, tells Dr. Daniel Neuhäuser, Bosch Corporate Sector Information Systems & Services. What optimized processes will be made possible in future by data collection and -processing on a centralized platform, explains he in the interview with „RFID im Blick“.

One hundred percent control of incoming and outgoing goods in the logistics center and zero mistakes at the dispatch

On Friday the items arrive in the logistics center. Tuesday, blouse or jeans are with the B2B-customer in the mail order company. To be able to react to the market quickly was the reason for Drykorn, the internationally up-and-coming fashion label for young dynamic fashion, to use RFID together with the Geis Group in their logistics center. With the implementation of RFID-technology at the time of the new fall/winter collection 2013, the companies benefit from a significant increase in efficiency in the internal logistics due to accelerated processes for incoming and outgoing goods, flawless shipping, as well as up-to-date data.

Traceability from production to the store

In the year 2012, the strategic decision was made at Migros to tag all containers with RFID-labels until 2016. The Genossenschaft Migros Ostschweiz is using RFID-container labelling as a basis to optimize its supply chain visibility. A first goal is to thoroughly track the processes of meat supply from the production until the supermarket.

Pleased rental car customers thanks to RFID

The car rental company Sixt is one of the biggest German companies by turnover in the sector and active world-wide, with more than 2000 rental stations. The car rental market is dynamic; the competitors are on the spot – at some German major airports, customers have the opportunity to choose from ten different car hire companies. The customers’ satisfaction regarding the service is therefore of high importance in the competition. In order to considerably improve the processes of the handing over and the taking back of vehicles, starting in February 2014, Sixt has rolled out an innovative UHF-RFID-application in ten countries. In the interview with „RFID im Blick“, Alexander Boone of Sixt tells that already after a short period of time measurable improvements could be noticed.

Selective Identification

By installing an ultra-high frequency industrial RFID system from BALLUFF onto an assembly line for heating boilers, the WESO foundry, a member of the Viessmann group, has solved one of the most difficult problems for determining OEE key performance indicators.

Determining OEE (overall equipment effectiveness) key performance indicators always proves to be extremely difficult if detecting and comparing parameters using a control system is not possible in process flows. This is frequently true for assembly lines with primarily manual or semi-automated processes. Additional measurement systems - such as compressed air flow sensors or electricity meters whose measured values, along with other parameters, could be assigned to individual products using a controller - often cannot be integrated in these cases. As part of a ReVista project, Michael Kreide, the responsible department manager at WESO for IH management, actively sought the most difficult range to measure on an assembly line for heating boilers. He did this in order to implement existing monitoring of the energy management system using component identification at every point down to the product level.

Retain an overview of more than 200 000 containers with RFID

For the efficient real-time supply management of more than 200 000 circulating RTIs (returnable transport items), at the beginning of the year, Dutch company Varoda Rent has put a UHF-solution at the loading ramps of its warehouse into operation.

Transparent Production with the Airbus Business Radar

Highest quality standards in order to protect human lives: „Should a screwdriver get lost in an airplane, it may cause fatal damages if the plane leaves the ground. This scenario must be prevented by all means – RFID supports us here. Furthermore, to streamline our production with RFID, we are increasing our processes’ transparency and are promoting innovation.“ From individual RFID-tags applied to a tool, to the smart factory, Marc Lorentz of Airbus Operations, tells in this interview, how Airbus, with RFID technology as the key enabler, optimizes Smart Factory’s business processes, insures quality and reduces costs at the same time.
