Clothing distribution machines at the Clinic

Fresh clothes within seconds

In May 2012 for the first time, two machines for clothing distribution were put into operation at the new surgery location Eselsberg of the University Hospital Ulm. Every garment is equipped with an RFID tag. Thus, washed laundry can be supplied quickly by the machine. Since autumn 2013 employees of five further clinics of the University Hospital at the location Michelsberg can get their cleaned clothes around the clock from a third machine. The Ulm Wäscherei Bohnet was asked to carry out cleaning services, as well as the installation and filling of the machines.

RFID in the automobile industry

In the year 1966, Opel built a completely new test center in Rodgau/Dudenhofen, 50 kilometers from Rüsselsheim. At that time, 33 kilometers of streets and tracks were constructed to test the vehicles' physical limits and durability under extreme conditions. Since the beginning of the first decade of the second millenium, the number of tracks at the test center has been growing by 50 percent so that the area currently includes more than 60 kilometers of test tracks which are going to be expanded to 100 kilometers in the next few years. The track types range from comfort to noise measuring tracks, to torture and mountain routes which are recreations of actually existing streets and serpentines, to high speed tracks.

“Despite the high traffic density, we never had a traffic jam at the entry points to the single tracks“ reports Dr. Matthias Schollmaier, Opel Test Center director, during a site visit by “RFID im Blick“.

Turck's RFID technology is installed in a production facility for Micro Gas Generators (MGG) of IMA Automation Amberg

In seatbelt tensioners and headrests Micro Gas Generators ensure that vehicle safety systems react instantly in case of an emergency. Therefore the capsules are filled with an exactly defined amount of powder in a fully automated production facility of IMA Automation Amberg. The assembly facility manufacturer makes use of Turck's RFID system using read/write heads approved for dust ex areas in order to ensure continuous and safe identification.

Minimally invasive surgery guided by real time imaging

By means of magnetic resonance tomographs (MRT), sectional images of the human body can be taken on a freely definable image plane allowing function and structure examination of tissue and organs. Modern MRTs' open construction furthermore enables minimally invasive surgery guided by real time imaging. Still usually only hydrogen atoms are detected in an MRT, instruments are invisible for imaging outside the body, which is why they need to be integrated into the imaging system using tracking solutions for instance. Previous optical solutions are time-consuming and most of all hard to handle. In a project promoted by the DFG the working group „Translationale Forschung (translational research)“ (Tra-Fo) of the centre for radiology (director Prof. Ulf Teichgräber) at Jena University hospital examines the suitability of an RFID based tracking system – with first positive results, as reports Felix Güttler, computer scientist and director of the Tra-Fo working group in the interview with „RFID im Blick“.

ATEX UHF-RFID

BIG BAG tracking and tracing in explosive atmospheres

For granulate production in the chemical industry additives are used which are filled into bags, transported and stored. An existing additive tracking system of a chemical company located in North Rhine-Westphalia still suffered from weaknesses because staff scanned the big bags using handheld devices based on HF RFID. As identification gaps kept occuring the company looked for an automated UHF RFID solution to read the big bags which are to be identified from a greater distance. Kathrein RFID certified ATEX products marketed by Tectus and designed in cooperation with Kathrein RFID were selected.

Security Service

Condor group uses innovative applications for quality assurance and service optimization

Innovative security service providers have left the image of a night watchman long ago. Meanwhile they cover highly qualified fields of activity such as control of baggage and persons at the airport, facility management or protection of rail construction sites against dangers of railway operations. For this activity the use of RFID technology plays an increasingly important role. No matter if passive RFID transponders are used to document controls carried out by the security personnel or active transponders are used to track persons in high risk areas, RFID technology is the key to the solution over and over.

Chemical logistics

Efficient transport handling in chemical parks

Increasing shipping quantity supported by customized systems and processes, fast handling without waiting periods, meeting highest safety standards – all accompanied by the demand for efficiency and cost redection. The demands of chemical parks' customers regarding logistics, transport management and the chemparks' infrastructure is high and still increasing. Integrated concepts are required providing producing customers and transport partners with predictable and fast handling.

Media modernization

Poland's oldest library follows international RFID trend

Research facilities and innovative companies promote the development and dissemination of RFID technology in Poland. Additional impetus in the global competition is in particular promoted by the Institute of Logistics and Warehousing operating the EPC/RFID test lab: The international RFID Innovative Center network's co-founder uses the results of its research as a basis to increase process efficiency in the economy through RFID in cooperation with twelve institutions (including the EECC Germany). Shadowcat is the name of the current software development for mobile RFID inventory which caused a significant leap towards modernization for one of the oldest libraries in Poland which was founded in 1829.

Automotive and NFC

Challenges for a generic NFC platform in order to achieve series maturity for use in automobiles

Since 2005 many BMW research developments have been focussing on NFC already. From the beginning the technology was examined from two different points: On the one hand practical developments such as the „key of the future“ were used to demonstrate how NFC-based solutions result in practical user benefits. On the other hand a cross series NFC infrastructure was developed at the same time which can be used for series production. Currenty an automotive suited platform ready for series production is being initiated at BMW. The objective is a generic platform which can be expanded by optional functions in the future.
