Pool System in Retail

Complete Transparency in Container Management

About 10 million reusable containers are in circulation between more than 600 locations and suppliers of the biggest Switzerland retail company Migros every day – a major challenge when it comes to organizing logistics processes. In order to optimize the flow of goods and information sustainably and efficiently, the retail company has been counting on RFID based container detection since 2012 already. Since the integration, Migros was able to improve the transparency in the supply chain significantly, which is why another eight million labels were ordered from Inotec in February 2014. In dialogue with “RFID im Blick“, Christoph Reill, International Sales Director, reports, which added values companies, such as Migros, can generate with an RFID-based container management.

With an annual traffic of 2.4 billion passengers, Moscow Metro is one of the biggest metro systems in the world. All types of tickets were already replaced with RFID based smart cards in 2008. Since 2013, a new generation of contactless tickets has been rolled out – one of the biggest transport card applications in Europe.

Pallet Pooling

The Technology Is Ready, Where Are the Users?

At the beginning of 2013, the step was accomplished. The established EPAL wooden pallet became an „intelligent“ load carrier – thanks to RFID. Since 2007 already, EPAL investigated the use of RFID technology. Together with many technology partners and institutes, EPAL had developed a solution for almost five years. During the development, approved standards of manufacturers and pool operators had to be taken into consideration. And today? „We are ready and we can deliver high numbers of tagged pallets within a short period“, says Martin Leibrandt, CEO at EPAL. „Trade companies that called for the 'intelligent' load carrier before 2007, are unfortunately very reluctant now“, Ingo Mönke adds who is EPAL Project Manager RFID and Management Board Member of the German National Committee of EPAL.

Manufacture of Corrugated Board and Cartons

Cartons always produced and delivered “just in time“

Fork lifts with RFID readers and touchscreens, antennas in the production facility, RFID gates tested by customers and external suppliers – The company Klingele Papierwerke invests great effort for a product which is often only considered to be waste in the end: Packaging solutions made of corrugated board. This consideration was not a barrier for Klingele to further develop RFID solutions together with the system house Stonegarden. The positive experience since the introduction of the technology in 2008 in the finished goods warehouse were reason enough to push the further use. In which processes is RFID used meanwhile, which added value does the technology provide for logistics and delivery quality, and which further solutions might be realized in the future: that is what Christian Stangrecki, Central Logistics Director at Klingele talked about in the interview with “RFID im Blick“.

Automobile Production

In the automotive field, RFID keeps on advancing. The plant and ident system's expansion at Audi in the Hungarian Györ is an example.

In 1993, Audi laid the foundations in the Hungarian Györ for the first location abroad, as the automobile manufacturer made the first step towards internationalization. 20 years ago, the plant was a pure engine production facility. Today, the production site, equipped with the most modern technology, serves for the complete car manufacture of the Audi A3 and TT. As a part of the expansion, Siemens planned, developed, and realized a central body mount section as a totally new building. In the course of the expansion, Audi also extended the use of RFID to the new plant. The technology is state of the art for Audi and a major constituent of a transparent and enery efficient production control. “RFID im Blick“ talked to Jens Dolenek, director of channel development in the field of industrial communication and identification at Siemens, about the Audi project and the significance of RFID in automobile manufacture.

Intralogistics

Zero Delivery Errors

By building a new service and logistics center in Ludwigsburg, cable and joining technology developer, manufacturer, and supplier Lapp has increased its warehouse capacity from 70,000 to 90,000 cable reels compared with previous locations. At the same time,Lapp improved the security of commissioning and logistics processes. One of the main reasons: In two of the three halls, the products are stored and conveyed automatically using RFID technology. In total, 83,000 transponders are integrated into reusable system pallets and trays which are transported on 500 meters of conveying technology.

“Every day, 3,500 delivery items leave the warehouse on average. Since the initial operation in June 2012, only one in 10,000 deliveries was incorrect. We were a little surprised ourselves by the reliability, the efficiency, and the added values the system provides“, explains Peter Melansek, Corporate Logistics Processes, U.I. Lapp, in the interview with “RFID im Blick“.

Clothing distribution machines at the Clinic

Fresh clothes within seconds

In May 2012 for the first time, two machines for clothing distribution were put into operation at the new surgery location Eselsberg of the University Hospital Ulm. Every garment is equipped with an RFID tag. Thus, washed laundry can be supplied quickly by the machine. Since autumn 2013 employees of five further clinics of the University Hospital at the location Michelsberg can get their cleaned clothes around the clock from a third machine. The Ulm Wäscherei Bohnet was asked to carry out cleaning services, as well as the installation and filling of the machines.

RFID in the automobile industry

In the year 1966, Opel built a completely new test center in Rodgau/Dudenhofen, 50 kilometers from Rüsselsheim. At that time, 33 kilometers of streets and tracks were constructed to test the vehicles' physical limits and durability under extreme conditions. Since the beginning of the first decade of the second millenium, the number of tracks at the test center has been growing by 50 percent so that the area currently includes more than 60 kilometers of test tracks which are going to be expanded to 100 kilometers in the next few years. The track types range from comfort to noise measuring tracks, to torture and mountain routes which are recreations of actually existing streets and serpentines, to high speed tracks.

“Despite the high traffic density, we never had a traffic jam at the entry points to the single tracks“ reports Dr. Matthias Schollmaier, Opel Test Center director, during a site visit by “RFID im Blick“.
